3D PRINTING HELP CENTRE
In the 123-3D help centre, we answer all your questions about 3D software and printer settings, problems you may experience during or after 3D printing and other 3D-related topics.
What is Nylon Filament?
Nylon filament is a strong, semi-flexible and durable filament type with impressive hardness. It has good heat resistance and is ideal for printing functional objects such as tie wraps, hinges and tools.
Main properties of Nylon filament:
Available in black, white and transparent
Very strong material
Heat resistant
Slightly flexible
Heated bed required

Nylon 3D filament has a printing temperature between 240°C and 260°C and is therefore resistant to high temperatures. In addition, nylon is stronger and more durable than PLA and ABS filament, and has a superior resistance to chemicals and UV radiation.
Nylon is very sensitive to drafts and absorbs water from the air, making it a bit more difficult to process. For an optimal 3D print, dry the nylon before use and print at a lower speed (30 – 45mm/s) in a draft-free room or with a closed 3D printer. To prevent your Nylon designs from curling during cooling, the use of a heated bed is essential.
Nylon filament is super versatile and has many applications. Is your nozzle clogged? Then use the 'cold pulling' technique where old filament residues adhere to the nylon or 123-3D
cleaning filament
. When the material has partially cooled, pull the Nylon filament with the attached residue out of the nozzle!
What are the advantages and disadvantages of Nylon filament?
Benefits of Nylon filament
Disadvantages of Nylon filament
Higher melting temperature, so more resistant to high temperatures
Not suitable for use in damp areas as attracts moisture from the air
Stronger and more durable than PLA and ABS
Sensitive to drafts when printing
Good wear resistance
Heated bed required
Does not give off an unpleasant odour during printing
Not suitable for all types of extruders and hot ends
Tips for printing with Nylon 3D filament:
Do not use a fan to
cool your Nylon 3D prints!
Nylon is very sensitive to drafts, cold and moisture. Store the filament in an airtight
container
and print your objects with a closed 3D printer for best results.
Use
3DLAC adhesive spray
for good first layer adhesion and ensure that the print bed is properly aligned.
Take into account a slightly longer print time, Nylon has an optimal print speed of 30 to 45mm/s.
Nylon tends to warp as it cools. The use of a
heated bed
ensures that the cooling process is gradual. For nylon, the ideal heated bed temperature is between 70°C and 90°C.
