Curling: The edges and corners of my 3D print are warped
Curling: The edges and corners of my 3D print are warped
3D PRINTING HELP CENTRE
In the 123-3D help centre, we answer all your questions about 3D software and printer settings, problems you may experience during or after 3D printing and other 3D-related topics.
Curling: The edges and corners of my 3D print are warped
Do you notice that the edges and corners of your 3D print are warping during or after printing? This is usually caused by the filament not cooling down fast enough when it leaves the nozzle. We also call this overheating. Another explanation is that the print cannot adhere properly to the print bed, causing the corners to curl up. This is also known as warping.
How can you fix or prevent curling?
Curling, or the warping of the edges of your 3D print, has various causes. That is why we have made an overview with important points for attention and the most common causes and solutions.
Ensure good adhesion of the first layer
Do you notice that the edges curl up immediately after printing the first layer? This can be caused by the filament not adhering properly to the print bed. Therefore, always make sure that your print bed is flat and aligned and that you use an
adhesive spray
. By following
this link
, you will find more information about good adhesion of the first layer.
Provide good cooling
The most common cause of curling is overheating. In short, this means that the plastic filament does not cool down quickly enough. To avoid this, increase the settings of your fan so that the filament cools down faster. Does your printer not have a fan? Then we recommend that you mount an external
fan
on the extruder or purchase a manually operated fan.
Lower the print temperature
If you still suffer from curling after adjusting the fan, it may be that you are printing at a too high temperature or that the heated bed is too warm. In this case, we recommend that you lower the print temperature (or heated bed temperature) in steps of five to ten degrees so that the filament cools down faster.
Print at a slower speed
Reduce your print speed so that each individual layer has more time to cool down before printing the next layer. This is especially relevant when printing small objects where each print layer only takes a few seconds. In this case, reduce the overall print speed, or set a 'speed override' so that layers that require less than fifteen seconds are automatically printed at a lower speed.
