What are 3D printer files?

When talking about 3D printer files, this can mean two things. On one hand, we are talking about the STL file in which the 3D objects is located, on the other hand, we can refer to the G code file with printing instructions for the 3D printer.

3D model printer files

Before you can actually start printing, you must first design or download a 3D model from a third party. The file types you use are labelled as STL, OBJ, AMF, 3DS, AST, 3MF, G file, X3D or BMP.  

Where can I download free 3D model files or STL files?

While there are many different platforms where you can download 3D files for free, there is one provider that stands head and shoulders above the rest: Thingiverse. This website offers more than 2.1 million free STL files, 3D printer models and 3D printer designs and is part of Makerbot Industries. In addition, there is a close-knit community associated with this platform, allowing you to easily share your own 3D designs or download ready-made files from other users.

G code printer files

Once you have downloaded your 3D model file/STL file, you can open it in the slicer software. The slicer software then creates a printing instruction for the 3D printer from this file. This printing instruction is built up in layers and is drawn up in a language that the 3D printer understands: G code.

Where can I create free G code files?

There are several free slicer software options that allow you to easily convert your STL file into G code. Cura is one of the best-known slicer software providers and is extremely suitable for beginners.
